Mulitple Sclerosis Patient Education Information

Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is an inflammatory disease of the Central Nervous System (CNS) that affects brain, spinal cord and optic nerves. Complications associated with MS include loss of muscle control and strength, vision problems and problems with sensation and mental functions.

Goal of Therapy
  • Interferons are found naturally in the body and help your immune system fight diseases.
  • REBIF® and AVONEX® are similar to the interferons found in the body and will help to control your immune system to decrease the number and severity of attacks.
    • Flu-like symptoms are common with REBIF® and AVONEX® and may be managed by taking acetaminophen or ibuprofen prior to your injection and every 4 to 6 hours as needed.
  • COPAXONE® is believed to change the way your immune system reacts to MS by preventing harmful cells from developing and by stimulating beneficial cells in your body. These "good" COPAXONE®-activated cells then enter the CNS and help reduce damage at the site of lesions.
Managing Side Effects
  • Some of the most common side effects of the Rebif® and Avonex® are:
    • Dizziness or weakness
    • Fever, chills or flu-like symptoms
    • Headaches and muscle aches
    • Pain, redness or swelling at the injection site
  • Some of the most common side effects of Copaxone® are:
    • Flushing
    • Chest Tightness or Palpitations
    • Anxiety or shortness of breath
  • The side effects of Copaxone® usually occur within 2-3 minutes of injection and disappear quickly.
  • Drinking plenty of water may help reduce some of the side effects.
  • Reactions may occur at the injection site. To reduce the injection site reactions:
    • Rotate injection sites
    • Allowing the medication to warm to room temperature by removing from the refrigerator 1 to 4 hours prior to your injection
    • Massage the injection site for 2 to 3 minutes after injecting the medicine
    • Apply ice to the injection site prior to and after the injection
Important Tips
  • It is important to keep all appointments with your physician and notify your physician of any side effects you are experiencing.
  • It is very important to notify your physician immediately if you are feeling depressed.
  • Females of childbearing age should use a reliable method of birth control and stop taking the medication immediately if they become pregnant.
  • There are several support groups available for patients with MS. These support groups offer clinical support, educational resources and assistance with financial reimbursement issues. These support groups include:
